How To Update Your Nokia Phone Software
Jaro 6. January 2007 :: e50, firmware, nokia, software, update, upgrade
A few hours ago I did a seamless software update on my Nokia E50 (RM-170; with camera) and I thought it might be useful to document the process. Many of us have never done the update before and it might be a little bit difficult if you are not very tech savvy. The following process can be applied to any Nokia phone which supports the software update. Check out the list here.
1. Backup your data – this is crucial; before you start doing anything you need to backup your phone; there are two ways:
- memory card – if you have a memory card then the process is simple; go to the Tools – Memory select Options – Backup phone memory; take out the memory card from the phone
- Nokia PC Suite – if you don’t have a memory card you can use the Nokia PC Suite software to do the backup; the software comes on a CD with your phone but if you don’t have it you can download it from the Nokia website (you’ll need USB cable to connect your phone and pc)

2. Charge your battery – this is very important; charge your battery to the full power before starting the update process; if you run out of battery in the middle of updating you can seriously harm your phone (it probably won’t even start up)
3. Download Nokia Software Updater – install the updater; this piece of software will guide you through the whole update process; you might need to unblock it in your firewall
4. Launch the Nokia Sofware Updater – from now on it’s really simple, just follow the guide and you’ll be fine; the whole updating process takes several minutes to complete, don’t try to cancel it in the middle in any case, your risk damaging your phone; in my case it took about 15 minutes to complete; USB cable needed again

5. Restore your data – if you used a memory card for backup then you simply go to the Tools – Memory select Options – Restore from card; if you used Nokia PC Suite you have to connect your phone to the pc via USB cable, select Backup and Restore
Now you have your phone loaded with the newest software. If you experienced some problems with your phone performance before the update process should fix it. So go on and check it out. To make sure your phone is really updated type *#0000# when in idle screen and check the software version. Hope it helped :)

My update went ok, but restoring the backup had some problems with installed software.
Personal data seemed to restore without problems, but for example the Golf game and Reuters needed to be re-installed. Also I have a bunch of previously installed themes I cannot uninstall anymore.
But it was a bit scary to see the phone in “test mode” during the upgrade. What if the power had gone down from my PC during the transfer of the new firmware? Or something… It would be nice to know in detail what problem situations the phone and the update software can manage…
Thanks for sharing, Oliver. I had a similar experience, one of the installed application wasn’t restored so I had to reinstall it.
I know what you mean when talking about the test mode. I didn’t even touch the phone when updating and was staring at the display seeing it blinking and going blank :D
Anyway, if something goes wrong I’m sure you can get the new software in any Nokia point or authorised service.
I updated my E50 firmware using Nokia software updater utility. I had connected my Phone to the charger and PC had a UPS. As cautioned all the previous data got deleted from the phone during/after the firware update, Restoring from the backup using Nokia PC Suite was successful. However, all S60 apps downloaded directly onto the phone (F-Secure Antivirus Mobile version) was not restored.
Overall, most of the data was restored.
i have some problems i think ! soo if on the step 2/3 ( updating ) it shows something like :No software updates available for your phone, ” Internal error ” what means that ? i have the latest updates or i have some problems with my phone ? Plz help me !
Yuri, you have to check later for updates. Nokia releases updates by countries, operators etc.
I updated my E50, which worked fine. However I did run into a little snag. Seems that when I backed up my phone to the memory card it saved 3 themes I had on my phone. So when I put the backup data onto my phone those 3 themes are now embeded in my phone and I can’t delete them. So I have a catch 22 problem now, if I reload the software I can’t use my backup data from my card, and I don’t know how to remove those themes from backup data from the memory card…
