Increase font size on your mobile with Font Magnifier

Jaro 15. May 2007 :: ,

If you are a regular reader of this blog you probably read about increasing font size on your mobile in my previous article. The trick was to install completely new fonts and then tell the phone to use them instead of the native fonts.

Now I have a much more elegant solution for you. It’s called Font Magnifier and it’s a small application which lets you easily increase or decrease the font size. No need to install new fonts and edit the paths on your hard drive the difficult way. How does the Font Magnifier work?

1.) Install the Font Magnifier and open Settings

Font Magnifier

2.) Use slider to change the font size

3.) Restart the phone

I made a few screenshot of before and after. Check them out and see what Font Magnifier is capable of.

AppShell - Font Magnifier

You can download Font Magnifier for all Symbian 3rd edition phones as a trial version from Psiloc website. If you find it useful you can purchase the license for only 9,95 €/13,48$. Definitely worth the money!

    Hi,

    Is this tool reducing the standby time of the E50? I have already installed the Largetime Screensaver, another application which reduce standby wouldn’t be optimal.

    Unfortunately the phone numbers in the contact list stay small as before. At least at my phone. Is there a way increasing the fonts of the phone numbers as well?

  2. David Ross :: 17. May 2007

    Downloaded the demo yesterday and it is just what I wanted. However, today, my phone kept refusing to start and telling me to take it back to the dealer. Started right 10th attempt after 15 minutes. Has anyone else had this problem? Need to know before I buy!

  3. Jaro :: 17. May 2007

    [1] I don’t think Font Magnifier can reduce the battery consumption. You are right, second row in contact’s details is still small. I’ll inform the guys from Psiloc. Let’s see if they can do something about it. Thanks for pointing that out!

    [2] David, I didn’t notice any startup problems using Font Magnifier. My phone is generally slow on startup but it’s because the phone memory is almost full.

    Try to uninstall the application and see if it improves the startup.

  4. MassDaemon :: 17. May 2007

    Nice tool. But it increases the boot time significantly, specially if you install it on memory card.
    It can also decrease the font size for those who are interested!
    It does change the number size in the contacts. Just put all the font sizes on the maximum and see it by yourself.

  5. ME :: 17. May 2007

    yes, it does increase the contact details if all sizes are on maximum. But in this case the other fonts are too big and are overlapping.

    For me it would be optimal, if the size of the contact details increase a lot, and all other fonts increase just a little bit.

    I can also notice a longer boot time, standby time seems to be the same.

    Many thanks, Jaro. I am beginning to suspect there is a gault with the phone rather than the download. Thanks for your answer though.

  7. David Ross :: 19. May 2007

    OK Jaro, got my handset back from Nokia now and apparently, it needed a complete reset. Could it be a coincidence that this happened after downloading Font Enlarger or maybe this S60 phone just doesn’t like the program. I would love to download it again but am a bit wary. What what you suggest?

  8. Achu :: 20. May 2007

    David,
    I have the same problem as you. I installed the software on my 6290 and it won’t start anymore. >:I Guess I have to send my phone back too.. Or did you find any other way?

  9. Jaro :: 20. May 2007

    Ouch, it won’t start? I suggest you guys install it on a memory card and if you encounter any problems just take out the memory card.

  10. David Ross :: 21. May 2007

    Tried again today with same problem even though this time, I put it on to the memory card rather than the phone (as suggested). Got my son to uninstall it and to get phone to go back to factory settings. This worked fine without help from Nokia agent this time. There does seem to be a problem here regarding the 6290 despite all the help Jaro has given. It’s a great piece of software but somehow, Achu and I don’t seem to have the magic touch that Jaro has given! Wish it wasn’t the case because the font on the phone is tiny! Perhaps you could explain Jaro in terms that even I can understand. Do you mean install it on the memory card, try booting up, watch it fail, take out the memory card, try booting again with it still out, hope it works, put memory card back in again while it is still on and hurrah, from then on, it’s perfect. I understand about taking the card out but surely, at some stage, you will have to put it back and the problem will re-occur.

  11. Jaro :: 21. May 2007

    David, good news. I’ve been in contact with guys from Psiloc and they told me that they know about the problem with Nokia 6290 and that they are working on a new version of Font Magnifier which will be released hopefully today.

  13. David Ross :: 24. May 2007

    Really bad news, Hameed and Jaro. Despite all your efforts. Just downloaded the new version and the only noticeable change is that the phone re-boots itself. As far as the 6290 is concerned, it still fails to boot up and tells me every time I try to take it to my local dealer. It was installed on the memory card as opposed to the phone. Will still work if I shut the flip immediately after turning on but not if I leave the flip open. So effectively, we are still at square one! Sorry about the bad news.

    the best application for phones all over

  15. katpod :: 1. June 2007

    Install it in the phone memory and u should have no problems.Just what I wanted for my E50.

  16. Federico :: 4. June 2007

    guys, i have bought three weeks ago Font Magnifier. it’s a great app. but you can’t connect your device to your pc. you must extract your Memory card from the phone and then reboot it. it’s the same operation you have to do if you change the fonts on the phone. the guys of Psiloc had to think about this disadvantage!!!!

  17. Dr.Kamini :: 10. June 2007

    I just re-insatlled the latest version 1.1 —-

    BUT have a small problem here — there a 4 set of alteration

    there are 4 sets ——-
    1) NOKIA Sans S60 —- 100
    2) NOKIA Sans TitleSmBd S60 —100
    3) Series 60 ZDigi — 100
    4) Other fonts — 100

    So please do tell me — at what numbers each should i keep them —- to
    get a good combination – to get a decent SIZE / MEDIUM THICKENESS /
    ENLARGED CONTACT NUMBER & WITH MINIMUM BOLDNESS
    JUST TRYING TO ADJUST TO COME TO A GOOD COMBINATION , & utimately
    when i`m try i land up with SATISFACTORY GOOD- FONT / SIZEBIG COntact number what i want,
    BUT then a STAUT THICK BOLD FONT IN SENDING & RECEIVED SMS FONT
    BECOMES TOOO THICK SMALL – ulgy

    A BIT HELP HERE with the numbers

    SO WHAT NUMBERS FOR THE ABOVE TO GET – What does what ?
    TO increase in Contact numbers bigger
    & the Contact names also , but the SMS While writing NEW & reading
    INBOX – font is altered only abit — not significantly thicker stauter
    — please , just not happy with outcome — must have tried a million
    combination — REbooting my phone a hundred times i guess

  18. Bilal Farooq Usmani :: 19. June 2007

    I installed it in my Nokia E-50 and it was a pleasant surprise for me. But suddenly after say 72 hrs it stopped working and demands a new licence. I’ld like to request the company that already I’ve invested a lot to buy Nokia E-50. The installer must be free for this specific phone.
