How To Increase Font Size On Nokia E50

Jaro 2. April 2007 :: ,

One of the most common questions that keep reappearing on this website or come to my inbox is How to change font size on Nokia E50. I usually reply that there is no official way to increase font size but there exists some kind of workaround. Trick is to change font for something bigger and more readable. I don’t have problems with small font, in fact I prefer it because that way more information fits on the screen. However some people have problems reading it. Here is a guide on how to change the font in your phone (do it on your own risk!):

You’ll need a memory card and a file manager (e.g. Y-Browser or ActiveFile).

1. Open your file manager and navigate to Z:\resource\Fonts

2. Check the names of the files (these are the fonts that are actually used); they have extension .ttf and most likely they are nosnr60.ttf, nssb60.ttf, nstsb60.ttf and S60ZDIGI.ttf; write them down, you’ll need them later

3. On your memory card create a folder called resource and inside it a folder called Fonts

4. Copy the new fonts to the Fonts folder on your memory card (there are numerous fonts available on the internet for free; try a few of them, experiment and see which fits the best)

5. Rename them in the following order: – nosnr60.ttf regular (normal) font – nssb60.ttf bold font – nstsb60.ttf font for titles

Note: if your font files have different names rename them accordingly. Font names on your memory card must match those on phone memory in Z:\resource\Fonts.

6. Reboot the phone

If you want to switch back to the default font simply erase the whole resource folder from your memory card. If you take your memory card out of the phone the default font will be used.

Feel free to share your additional tips or experiences in the comments below.

UPDATE: I wrote a short follow up including new font set for download. Check it out.

    Thanks for the tip!

    Now if only someone knows how to turn off the camera sound when taking pictures…

  2. Rikee :: 4. April 2007

    @roi.stork
    Z:\System\Sounds\Digital\ you have few sound’s but I’m not sure that you can replace them with 0b mp3’s, since they are system files

  3. Anbarasan :: 5. April 2007

    I tried for font changing. Through the PC Suite file manager, I could not find a folder called z:\resources

    When I formatted the 1gb sd card in that also no folders replicated.

    But I created a folder called resources and did the 1-6 activities.

    on switching off and on, it did not change the font

    Any help???

  4. roi.stork :: 7. April 2007

    @rikee

    Found the camera capture sound I was looking for to replace. Too bad I can’t replace/remove it because it’s read-only.

  5. Shomy :: 8. April 2007

    Does somebody know what font is large and clear?

  6. Mike Mannion :: 10. April 2007

    i think the actual system file is Resource and NOT Resources. The phone rejected a folder being created called Resource but was happy to create a Resources folder. I think the phone rejects any duplication of system folders.

    can someone tell me if anyone has managed to change the fonts on e50 and how, becaus ei have tried with the steps from 1-6 but cannot do it, there is a resource folder on the memory card, but the telephone doesnt let me create a fonts folder in it, so i have to make another folder resources and create a font folder but it doesnt work like that, plus what fonts are we suppose to put on the phone? the same that we use on our pcs?
    i would really appreciate an answer and solution to this problem cause i have been trying for the last few days to solve this problem for my fathers cellphone with no luck

    I also have tried to change the fonts, the way it was described above, but it didn’t work. There is no Z:/resources/Fonts folder. The fonts folder is in Z:/resource and its not possible to create a folder resource on the memory card. Was something changed by Nokia, since this workaround was posted ?
    I would really appreciate if someone could tell me how to do this.
    Thanks

    Hi guys, if the phone won’t allow you to create the resource folder on your memory card do it via pc (you’ll need memory card reader for that).

    Thanks for the correction, there is no folder resources. It’s resource, my mistake, corrected.

    Hi all,
    first: thanks and congratulation for the discussion,

    second: I can create the “resource” folder at Z (via PC), but when looking for it at the telephone, it appear in capital letters “RESOURCE”, same happens with the fonts files. Could it be the reason why it does´n work? Any idea to correct it?

    third: I have been told that verdana.ttf works fine at other S60 3rd phones.

    looking fordward for the solution, thanks again

    just got the E50 and i want to either uninstall the quickoffice viewer or install the upgrade but it wont work. keeps saying its built -in. what do i do?

  12. Henryk Fridman :: 26. April 2007

    I have the same problem like Pablo. Also here when I insert the SD card into the phone the Directory Name is in caps letters.
    Also I have another question: Do I need also to copy the file S60ZDIGI.ttf to the folder on the SD card or do I have to use another font and rename it like the 3 others?

    Thanks a lot in advance

    Henryk

    hi there,
    anyone can teach me how to delete some words that i’d like to take off from the t9 dictionary on my e50? thanks!!!

  14. DontheCat :: 30. April 2007

    Thanx Jaro dude…. Worked perfectly for me, though after a bit of trial and error with fonts from my Windows/fonts directory.

    Of course the best way to do it was to plug in my SD directly into the laptop slot and copy my selected fonts. I was surprised to see a folder titled resource; meaning I dint have to create it. :-)

    Pablo>I used Verdana and it came out just fine, though V looks a bit expanded. But honest anything better than the stupid default fonts !!! (Wonder what Nokia had in mind when they integrated such miniscule fonts).

    I also copied Georgia as S60ZDIGI , but yet to figure out where it is used.

    While this is a great workaround, I’d still like to see Nokia release a patch that would enable font scalability on the fly.

    Thanks again Jaro. I hope its okay if I link to this post in other places where I noticed folks looking for a solution. :-)

  15. Henryk :: 30. April 2007

    Hello its me again. I still struggling with one problem and I would really appreciate if someone would be able to help me out:
    After creating the directory “resource” and “Fonts” on the memory card by using my PC and cpoying the fonts to it. I reinsert it into my phone and the directory name “resource” is still shown as “RESOURCE” even on my PC its lower case.

    Thanks a lot in advance

  16. tidi :: 30. April 2007

    Hi,

    I created the resource folder inside the memory reader, but when I try to create the fonts folder inside that folder using “y browser” I just got a message saying err 46.
    Has anybody the same issue, the thing is that I don’t have a micro sd reader to create the folder in the computer.

  17. Henryk :: 2. May 2007

    Hi,

    finally I made it and its almost perfect. When I open the address book, and I select one entry, the titles for each field are now with large characters but the entry himself is still in this super small font and the only way to get a larger font displayed here, is to go to edit mode. Any idea how to change this ?

    Thanks
    Henryk

  18. abhishek :: 3. May 2007

    hey thanks for the great idea….

    but i could end up in a productive output….

    i created the folders required but then too while opening the font files on the moblie it showed some kind of error…

    the font files could not be copied via the mobile itself…

    it would be really helpful if someone either comes up with a better solution or with a more descriptive solution for the given here…

    thanks…

    sorry my bad english

    The memory card should be written necessarily with a reader of memory cards, only of that way.

    I have built an group of fonts that can be download here: http://w13.easy-share.com/1054150.html

    Can be seen screenshots here: http://w13.easy-share.com/1054151.html

    regards
