Smart2go - maps, GPS navigation and city guides all in one
Jaro 16. April 2007 :: gps, maps, navigation, smart2go
How would you like to have maps, GPS navigation and city guides all in one package on your mobile phone? Sounds good? Then check out smart2go – an application released by Nokia a few months ago. It’s one of the most interesting applications I have ever installed on my device. Too bad I can’t take a full advantage of it due to the lack of a GPS receiver.
Smart2go runs on the Nokia E50 just fine although it’s not listed among the supported devices. I downloaded the version for Nokia E61 and used maps and route planning features without any problems. Hopefully Nokia E50 will be soon officially supported so we can take a full advantage of all the functions. Let’s see what we can actually do with smart2go:
smart2go maps

The main part of smart2go are maps. You can download them on the go as you browse different locations or you can download them beforehand to your device via MapLoader. The latter option is free as you don’t need to use an active connection and pay your provider for the data transfer. Simply connect your phone to the pc via USB and load any maps you need. It’s recommended to use a memory card (maps are quite large files) unless you have a big internal memory.
Maps are full of very powerful features. You can calculate the distance between any two places, simulate navigation from one place to another or get a step by step guide how to get from place A to place B. This is all part of the route planner which you can use even without a GPS device.
smart2go as GPS
I haven’t had a chance to test the GPS feature because I don’t have a GPS receiver. GPS receivers are built in some Nokia phones (Nseries) but other users have to buy an external GPS device (prices start from around $100). If you have experience with external GPS devices please let me know.

smart2go city guides
City guides are a paid feature of smart2go. You can purchase a city guide straight from your phone. There are a few options including MasterCard, Visa, Amex or Phone Bill. Cityguides are a great way to discover close restaurants or hotels when you are in a foreign town.
Have you used smart2go? How do you like it?

Hey!. About your tips to keep your batery charged:
When you are making a call or talking, try to keep out your hand from the antena. The antena it’s located behind the camera lens.
When you do that, you are bothering the signal and the phone try to recover it using more charge than the habitual.
Sorry by my english, i speak spanish. you can transcribe this text to put in your “7 tips to extend your battery life”
Hi matias, thanks for your tip! I’ll make sure to include it in the second round of the battery saving tips.
Att.: Jaro…
You need a seperate place for people to write to you…
A seperat forum, or “shout” function…
This “posting comments” i the wrong topics is really irritating, im sure you feel the same way
been trying out smart2go all day…
Its GREAT!...
Works really well, I’m looking in to bying a GPS receiver to take full advantage of the phone..
By the way Jaro, you write that since E50 doesnt appear on the device list on theĆr website, we cant take full advantage of smart2go…
What is it that we are missing out in?
[3] Yes, it happens from time to time that people write comments under the wrong article. I’m considering some kind of small forum but there are already so many great places to discuss phones that making another one might be waste of time. I’ll keep it in mind. Thank you for bringing it up.
[4] I wrote this review about a month ago and honestly I don’t remember what I had in mind by taking a full advantage of the application :).
If you decide to buy a receiver shoot me an email. I’d like to know how the navigation works with E50.
Dear all,
Iam going to buy E50 and I want to use something like smart2go.
My question is: is smart2go free?
on their web-site / Questions and answers are 2 questions
Q:Is smart2go really free?
A:Yes, the smart2go software is free.
and then later
Q:How much does navigation cost?
A:When purchasing navigation you acquire a license valid for a certain region and period of time. You can find the price for the license in smart2go.
What does it mean Navigation? The voice navigation?
Thanks
Miro, Slovakia
Hi Miro,
yes, you got it right. By navigation they mean voice nagivation. It’s useful when you drive a car.
Don’t forget that the GPS navigation won’t work by default on your E50, you’ll need to buy a GPS receiver.
If you have more questions feel free to ask.
Do you know how much it costs? The voice-nav?
Heres how it works…
You purchase the navigation part using the smart2go program…
extra services -> add navigation

I bought a Nokia LD-3W GPS receiver to go with my e50 and the Maps program. It works pretty well, however it drops the signal occasionally, and sometimes takes 30 seconds or more to reacquire the signal. This is a deal-breaker for the driving functionality, and I have not yet bought the voice-command functionality. I also used the GPS receiver for the new Nokia “Sports Tracker” Program… It is very imprecise with the LD-3W receiver… the signal jumps around, and makes it seem like I ran 10 miles when I only ran 4. My final verdict is, it’s not ready for prime time with the e50. Hoping for better functionality when the n95 price comes down.
Youre sure its not the GPS thats the problem and not the program?
Dear C,
it is the problem of GPS reciever. The software only recieves the data and then calculates the position and speed.
What I know, this type of reciever has a serious problem whit connection to the satelites inside of the city.
If you have connection to only 5 satelites, the precision of position and speed measuring goes down!
