CONTEST: What's your favourite S60 application?

Jaro 21. May 2007 :: ,

It’s time for some serious discussion. Let’s talk about your most favourite S60 application. It can be 3rd party or native, commercial or free. Which one do you like the most? Share your view in the comments below. Tell us what’s the application of your choice and the reason you like it. Maybe we will find some cool apps :)

Question Mark

I’ll start. My most favourite application is Notes. I use it on a daily basis to store my ideas, shopping lists etc. It’s simple but powerful at the same time. The best thing about it is that it’s always with me.

CONTEST: To spice it up a little bit I’ll give away 2 prizes if we reach 50 comments. Only one relevant comment per person counts. The prizes are two handy applications: GSync and Font Magnifier. I’ll select the winners randomly from all participants. Everbody has a chance to win!

    Its a tough choice between Profimail and FExplorer for me.

    Both of them are excellent applications and must haves according to me. They make your life peace like heaven.

    I hope first comment gives me an edge to win that Font Magnifier for my E50 :-)

  2. Joao :: 21. May 2007

    Must be Profimail, can’t imagine managing mails without it.

    Great competition! Hope me wins! :D

  3. Peter :: 21. May 2007

    Sorry for off, but…

    I am using internal mailer with IMAP and it works. What cool features is in Profimail ?

  4. fricike :: 21. May 2007

    The the most-uber-greatest is OperaMini, ofcourse. :) The nexts are GMaps and Gmail. I found AutoLock and M!Weather very useful too. These are, that works on E50 (i mean i tested on mine e50).

    My previous(-prev-prev-prev) phone was N3650, for that i can tell my favourites, but i dont know if there are a S60V3 port of them. They are:
    1) guitartuner from flyerone, coz guitar is my life. No V3 version afaik, i tried to request an upgrade, but no luck yet :-(
    2) Switcher for killing every frozen app, so reboot not needed
    3) miniGPS
    4) KillerVirus was one of the most creative games for S60s i think :)
    5) MobipocketReader was another one i used alot
    6) nfsapp for mounting my phone under *nix and mac
    7) with Lookup i could search contacts by number, but its useless on E50

    What i’d really like to see is a voice recorder, that can rec more than 1 minute of audio.

    Im sure i forgot some, i’ll post them if they come in my mind.

  5. Agung :: 21. May 2007

    It must be Opera Mini Browser. Best application for me, it can saving cost for surfing. :)

  6. Petr :: 21. May 2007

    It’s really hard to choose!
    I must write you my candidates:
    HandyClock – for its alarms and timers (i don’t get why it isn’t in base symbian equipment!)
    Qreader – for its czech text encoding and always-with-me-books
    HandyTaskMan – quick way to get info about memory and tasks from everywhere
    BestProfiles – invaluable help for student.

    And the winner is…..

    Qreader!
    Because it cannot be substituted as the other applications can.

    I’m looking forward to Font Magnifier from you! ;-)

    btw-OperaMini would be the one, but it isn’t a S60 app (it would be nice to have Opera Mini as S60 app).

  7. stef :: 21. May 2007

    I’d say Smart2Go by Nokia.
    + It has really nice assistant app on Windows on managing/downloading the maps
    http://smart2go.com/

  8. JBB :: 21. May 2007

    smart2go is (going to be) my favorite app, particularly if the turn-by-turn voice navigation features work as advertised.

    I’m still trying to get things like EQO and the Gizmo Project working on my E50. Kinda wish I’d sprung for a more expensive model phone. But I’m already lucky the wife didn’t know how much this one costs. :)

  9. JaMi :: 21. May 2007

    profimail and agilemessenger, very easy using and fast programs

  10. nullkey :: 21. May 2007

    My choice is PuTTY for Symbian. Having a ssh connection to proper unix machine opens a lot more possibilities than just running native Symbian applications on the phone.

  11. Preet :: 21. May 2007

    I feel HandyBlack-List, is the most useful Application for the E50 so far, for me.

  12. Partha Banerjee :: 21. May 2007

    Well as of my choice it’s a bit tough between WORLDMATE & AGILE Messenger. Because the former updates me with so many useful info realted to Weather, Currencies & Time Zones covering the Globe while the latter allows me to be ONLINE with my Important Contacts & to share vital communications with them while being on the move.

  13. Sanyci :: 21. May 2007

    My favorite apps on my E50:

    MSI BluePlayer – it plays mp3 in stereo on stereo i.Tech bluetooth headsets

    OPM Agent – it connects my phone to Oxygen Symbian Phone Manager applicatin on my notebook

    Handy Taskman – it is the best alternative for the built-in task manager

    Opera Mini – the best application for web surfing and rss reading

    AudioNotes – I’m using it for voice notes on the go

    Fring – the superb application for chating and VOIP calls (on the E50 it manage the chat only, but the VOIP part [for example Skype] worked fine on my E61)

    S60Spoton – for managing the phone lights

    AutoLock – I can’t understand why it is not a built-in feature

  14. Jaro :: 21. May 2007

    Thanks everyone for participating. Some great applications have been mentioned here. Keep them coming!

  15. Martin :: 21. May 2007

    I use the fun Nokia Still Image Editor on my E50.

    It is intended for Nokia 3250 but it works on E50. This software add editing functionality to “Gallery”. Of course it’s free.

    Nokia_3250_ImageEditor.SIS

    But my favorite software is Tomtom navigator 6. It’s perfect fast and clear it indicates speed limits time of arrival …

    Another fun one is GTx to mesure your car performances.

    Metr0 is very useful to find your way in subways all over the world.

    DivX Player is useful too to show my friends videos grabbed from Youtube.

    S-Tris 2 is a good Tetris like game and it’s free.

  16. costin :: 22. May 2007

    LCG Jukebox
    Handy Clock – for autolock

  17. alberto :: 22. May 2007

    im browsing all the time so browser makes my most favourte app.

  18. Luxus :: 22. May 2007

    Well, it’s hard to choose..

    For me I think are:

    HandyClock
    AutoLock
    and I hope Font Magnifier :-)

  19. Sandra :: 22. May 2007

    I agree the Notes is simple but yet essential for my daily use. A favourite application is the SafeTxt. After my Nokia 6230i there was no wallet function in the E50 & I felt my mob was exposed (& myself) and could not store safe info, I tried it once and I stick to it, maybe there are better ones, but this is more complicated for others to find on my E50, so, it’s safer for me :)

    Finally cCalc is the best calculator I have tried. I did not like the one that came with the phone at all! I need to do more complicated calculations and push less buttons! I think these ones are my fav at the moment :)

  20. sx :: 22. May 2007

    x-plore
    alon mp3 dictaphone
    opera mobile
    advanced device locks

  21. Iceberg :: 22. May 2007

    Handy Taskman – used quite often switching between aplications…

    shMessenger Platinum – very good, free yahoo messenger…

    Calendar – used every day…

    Notes

    LCG Jukebox

    X-plore

    and…. my best friend at university: Solution

  22. Pr0meTheus :: 23. May 2007

    • Opera Mini Browser, best choice for saving money and
    • Clock Screensaver from mBounce – replacement for original and very small clock.

  23. Mangola :: 23. May 2007

    Here are my choices:

    1. PuTTy for S60: one of the best application by far on Symbian for *nix freaks like me, it does open up a whole universe for you which is not limited up to Symbian OS :) Although a bit clumsy to use on E50 but works like a charm on QWERTY keypads.

    2. Opera Mini: I would recommend it for best browser award of the era!!

    3. Profimail: Hard to imagine life without it…the application couldn’t be more friendly.

  24. shooter :: 23. May 2007

    HeadLine – RSS Reader
    QReader – for books in fb2
    Opera 8.60 for Symbian
    Handy Keylock and Handy Alarm – necessary apps for symbian 9.1

  25. RS77 :: 23. May 2007

    Best Profiles & Alarm Manager!

  26. Beleg :: 24. May 2007

    The best, most useful (for me) and really cool s60 application is Nokia OSS browser & IM+

  27. merlin :: 24. May 2007

    The best apps on my E50 are:
    Alarm manager
    Best Keylocker
    Best Taskman
    Best Profiles

    All these apps either replace or complete functionnalities not well thought enough on S60 3rd edition devices: couldn’t use my E50 without them anymore….

  28. David Ross :: 24. May 2007

    It would be Font Magnifier by a mile if I could only get it to work! (sob)

  29. Arda Inal :: 24. May 2007

    I don’t use applications, without Google Maps Mobile I love it. I have 3 applications on my mobile;
    1- Google Maps Mobile

    2-Phonetinfo

    3-Scrrenshottaker

  30. Mahoney :: 25. May 2007

    LIVE Dictionary for translations to Spanish, German and French, because I travel a lot.

    LIVE Dictionary

  31. Fred :: 25. May 2007

    Opera Mini and EQO

  32. Henrik Nilsson :: 26. May 2007

    I absolutely love Fring. Use it daily both for SIP calls and to chat with my friends on my way home from work, via the GoogleTalk or MSN feature in the application.

  33. Alex :: 29. May 2007

    Hi, thanks to all for the useful tips. I just got the E50, love it, and, of all the stuff you guys suggested, my favourite is by far Fring, although it took me a while to figure out that it could be downloaded for chat only (as they don’t explicitly offer that option, so I had to register as E60). Otherwise, I like ProfiMail, although the design is not great, and TurboMSN, although no one I know still uses MSN.

  34. bee :: 29. May 2007

    my favourite app is papyrus, a replacement for the included calendar soft…

  35. Atos :: 31. May 2007

    Handy Clock is my favourite. I use it’s alarm on working days and the screensaver (when it is working).
    Hope I will win Font Magnifier!

  36. Rift :: 31. May 2007

    Best Birthday for me.
    Really helpful app that shows zodiac sign, remaining days to next one, year of birth, can set alarms and more – all about you friends and relatives birthdays in one place

  37. Hendra :: 2. June 2007

    I think my favorite app is SmartMovie. Work great! Just leave the converter running all night, and watch the movie if you have a chance. Great stuff! I use native Web Browser on daily basis too (got free hotspot on my campus :P)

  38. Jenn L. :: 6. June 2007

    My favorite app is very new, it’s SMSChat by SymbianWave.
    It takes the hassle out of multiple button presses and adds a fun and practical threaded SMS interface.

    I have an unlimted text plan, so texting is how I do the majority of communication. (That is – when a phone call can’t be done)

  39. ... non capisco! :: 11. June 2007

    1. Profimail
    2. Opera Mini
    3. SmartAlarm
    4. SmartMovie

  40. V. Kumar :: 12. June 2007

    My favourite program for the E50 is Handy Clock… excellent on so many levels.

  41. ^LiO^ :: 14. June 2007

    Let me see…
    1. LCG X-Plore
    2. LCG Jukebox
    3. PhoNetInfo
    4. BestProfiles
    5. Handy Clock
    That’s for me :)
