Update Your Daylight Saving Time Settings

Jaro 12. March 2007 :: , , ,

Nokia has recently updated database containing the daylight saving time dates. In order for some applications to work properly (e.g. Calendar) you should download and install the application which will update the database on your device. From the Nokia E50 Support page:

The date of the “Daylight saving time” will be changing in certain countries during 2007. This application updates database in the device containing the daylight saving time dates. This will help e.g. in avoiding a conflict in calendar synchronisation if the device and PC are having a different time. Please restart your device after installation for the changes to take effect.

How To Repair Power Key On Nokia E50 (video)

Trinity E50 Case

doug 26. February 2007 :: , , ,

Just a bit of a review on this cool little case I found for my E50. It’s made by Trinity-Deutschland. I don’t know about any other E50 owners, but myself was relieved to have run across an accessory for the E50 that actually works.

Trinity Case for Nokia E50

I tried various other modes of transportation for my phone but nothing quite fit the bill. Then I saw this case from Trinity on Ebay and figured why not. And I couldn’t be happier, I did however see another that looks almost identical to this one made by Krusell. But the Krusell has a cumbersome looking flap that has to be unsnapped to use the camera. The Trinity doesn’t, it has a nice full view cutout in the back for the camera. It also comes in 4 different styles. There’s the Aquarium, Clip, DrehClip and Uni (check them all here). So there’s a bit of something for different tastes.

The case itself is a clear plastic cover on front with a full view of the phone. It also has a hole perfectly placed for the joystick, the rest of the case is made of a nice soft quality leather, unless you get the Aquarium, witch also has a clear back. So if you were like I was and were in need of a decent case you should check it out.

Step-by-Step Guide To Making Your Own Nokia E50 Metal Black

Jaro 12. February 2007 :: , ,

Last week we looked at the photos of a home made Metal Black E50. This time I have a great guide with photos for you. A huge thanks goes to Doug who documented the whole process. I know that some of you will find it very helpful. So without further comments let’s make our own Metal Black E50:

Friday Photo

Jaro 9. February 2007 :: , , , ,

I got this idea to publish here one photo every Friday. While I’m far from being a good photographer and the E50 camera is only 1.3 MPix without optical zoom I hope you’ll find a few interesting shots here. You are very welcome to join me. The only condition is that the photo must be made with a Nokia phone.

You come to this blog from all over the world so it may be interesting to see different kinds of photos from different time of the year. It’s cold winter up here in Finland and I often find myself staring at the photos of my friends from the southern hemisphere. So go out, take a few pictures and send them in (contact@nokiae50.info), it will be fun!

I’ll start with a photo I took yesterday. If you are from a Nordic country you probably know what’s on the picture. If not, submit your guesses in the comments below :)

Make your own Nokia E50 Metal Black

Jaro 5. February 2007 :: , , , ,

It’s not easy to get a Metal Black E50. Lots of people write in and ask where to buy one. Unfortunately there are only a few on-line stores which offer it, most of them located in Europe. It looks like the metal black is not meant for the U.S. market at all.

If you can’t live without the metal black beauty there is a relatively simple way to make one. You’ll need one Nokia E50, front and back cover, a keypad and a tiny bit of patience. Doug has sent me a few photos of his custom made Nokia E50 Metal Black. It’s a work in progress, he is waiting for a new black keypad to arrive but so far it looks good. Check it out:

Nokia E50 back

Nokia E50 top

Nokia E50 bottom

The only missing part (except of the keypad which is on its way) is the bottom silver piece. It doesn’t come with the cover so you’ll have to use the old one. If anyone knows where to get the black bottom please let us know.

Where to get the parts?

You can buy these parts on the internet. Here are a few useful links (thanks Doug):

Speedlinking 29. January 2007

Jaro 29. January 2007 :: , ,

It’s been a while since the last speedlinking. I’m not sure if I can still call it a speedlinking as it has nothing to do with speed. I tried hard but still haven’t come up with a better title. Speedlinking is simply my collection of links that owners of the E50 might find useful too, so here we go:

2 new themes after the firmware update

Jaro 26. January 2007 :: , , , , ,

If you are looking for the new themes (skins) that were announced in the latest Nokia E50 changelog you can find them through the Catalogs (thanks TV for the hint). Here is a short guide for those who are not very familiar with the Catalogs application:

1. Go to the Catalogs application which you’ll find in the Main Application Shell

2. First item in the Catalogs should be Nokia extra applications, select it, then scroll down and find the Themes item

3. Download both available themes (Dark Stripes and Steel). You can activate them in the ToolsThemes menu.

Although I’m not fan of modifying my phone I have to say that these themes look pretty neat – simple, sharp and professional. I switched to the Dark Stripes for now and I think I’m going to stick with it. How do you like them? Do you use custom themes or are you fine with the default one?

How To Update Your Nokia Phone Software

Jaro 6. January 2007 :: , , , , ,

A few hours ago I did a seamless software update on my Nokia E50 (RM-170; with camera) and I thought it might be useful to document the process. Many of us have never done the update before and it might be a little bit difficult if you are not very tech savvy. The following process can be applied to any Nokia phone which supports the software update. Check out the list here.

1. Backup your data – this is crucial; before you start doing anything you need to backup your phone; there are two ways:

Nokia Backup

2. Charge your battery – this is very important; charge your battery to the full power before starting the update process; if you run out of battery in the middle of updating you can seriously harm your phone (it probably won’t even start up)

3. Download Nokia Software Updater – install the updater; this piece of software will guide you through the whole update process; you might need to unblock it in your firewall

4. Launch the Nokia Sofware Updater – from now on it’s really simple, just follow the guide and you’ll be fine; the whole updating process takes several minutes to complete, don’t try to cancel it in the middle in any case, your risk damaging your phone; in my case it took about 15 minutes to complete; USB cable needed again

Nokia Software Update

5. Restore your data – if you used a memory card for backup then you simply go to the ToolsMemory select OptionsRestore from card; if you used Nokia PC Suite you have to connect your phone to the pc via USB cable, select Backup and Restore

Now you have your phone loaded with the newest software. If you experienced some problems with your phone performance before the update process should fix it. So go on and check it out. To make sure your phone is really updated type *#0000# when in idle screen and check the software version. Hope it helped :)

Nokia E50 Software Update Available

Jaro 6. January 2007 :: , , , , ,

Nokia Software Update

A long awaited software update (or firmware update/upgrade as some prefer to call it) for the Nokia E50 is now available. The new software version is V 06.41.3.0 24-10-2006 RM 170 Nokia E50 and you can download it through the Nokia Software Updater. A quick warning before you do anything – do backup your phone! During the software update all your data such as contacts, messages, media files etc. will be deleted.

Why should you update your phone?

A software update usually delivers fixes for the little bugs which couldn’t be fixed before releasing the phone to the market due to time constrains or simply because a bug appeared only after heavy usage.

Is it safe?

Here comes the dilemma. As long as you follow all the instructions you should be fine but there are already cases that people lost all their contacts. I did the update myself and everything went smoothly. I will repeat myself but this is very important – do not ignore the instructions and follow them closely. Backing up the phone is crucial here.

How to do the software update?

If you have never done it before or you don’t feel very comfortable with techy stuff I will soon publish a write up of how I did the update. The instructions on the Nokia Software Updater are very clear but I can imagine it can be bit difficult if you never did it before. So watch here for a follow up article including the step by step guide and the screenshots.

Nokia Stereo Headset

Jaro 4. January 2007 :: , , , ,

Most of the Nokia smartphones (including the E50) come with a single earpiece. Listening to music that way is quite distracting. Kenneth has recently asked (thanks for the question, Kenneth):

Is it true that we cannot use headset with dual ear piece on the E50? The packing came with headset with a single earpiece! I tried other stereo headsets and it still plays on only one earpiece.

The answer is Yes, it is possible to listen to music on the E50 with stereo headphones. Apparently you’ll need the correct headset compatible with the E50. There are two ways how to go about it:

Nokia Audio Headset

1. Nokia Stereo Headset most of these headsets claim the compatibility with all Nokia phones so my guess is that it will work on the E50 too; I would appreciate if anyone with experience could let us know

Nokia Audio Adapter

2. Nokia Audio Adapter – I found this little inexpensive adapter only recently; it allows you to plug in your headphones with the standard 3.5mm plug; there are different types of this adapter for different Nokia phones; the one I linked to is compatible with Nokia E50

End key not lit properly

Jaro 25. December 2006 :: , , ,

I’m not sure if you noticed this but you most likely have a problem with the background light on your end key. On most of the E50 mobiles it’s not lit very well if at all. It’s not the end of the world but I keep wondering why some models don’t have this problem while other do. Check out this pictures to see what I’m talking about:

1. Properly lit end key

End key background light

2. Badly lit end key

Missing background light of the end key

See? The end key is situated right under the C key on the right. You can’t see it on the second picture but it’s nicely red on the first one. Weird.

Nokia E50 Metal Black available for USA and Canada

Jaro 18. December 2006 :: , , , ,

Good news for the overseas folks! I found a store which will ship the metal black E50 outside the European Union. They sell for reasonable price (€272/$355 + shipping) and their website is also in English. The store is located in Switzerland.

How to proceed

1. Go to Digigasin.ch and switch the interface to English (English flag at the top of the page); if you are more friendly with Euro currency choose EUR from the dropdown menu in the top right corner

2. Search for “nokia e50 metal black”. At the moment they offer only the camera model. Click “Buy” and then “Checkout”.

3. Register as a new customer unless you already have an account in this web store.

4. Choose a shipping option

5. Pay. You can pay via bank transfer (you’ll get 3% discount), credit card/paypal, Moneybookers or Postcard and Yellownet. Continue.

6. Confirm and wait. If you chose credit card/paypal option (which most of the people do) you’ll be redirected to the paypal website where you’ll pay for the phone.

7. Wait for your phone to arrive and enjoy. If you come back to this blog and report on how you like it or send me a few pics that would be great.

I hope this will help a few folks out there. I also updated the list of the stores which offer the metal black E50 online. Also this currency converter might come handy.

With or without camera?

Jaro 4. December 2006 :: , , , ,

head scratch

A few people asked me which model I recommend – with or without camera. When I was buying my E50 I was struggling with the same problem. I just couldn’t decide. In the end I went for the model with camera. A few things to consider:

If you want to see what kind of photos you can make with E50, check out Flickr. My final verdict is: get the model with a camera if you can afford paying a few bucks more.

Nokia E50 on Flickr

Jaro 29. November 2006 :: , , , ,

Flickr logo

There has been lots of discussion about the Flickr Camera graphs which show the most popular cameras and camera phones used on Flickr. First place belongs to Sony Ericsson followed by two Nokia Nseries phones.

But where is our E50? Can it compete with the entertainment series? Not really but you will be surprised that it’s doing pretty well considering it’s a new phone, has only 1.3 megapixel camera and it’s intended to be used mainly for business. So let’s have a look how it’s doing among all the Nokia phones:

I was pleasently surprised when I saw these statistics. I didn’t think I would find so many photos on Flickr made on the E50. And some of them even look good! Have a look yourself:

Guy in a car - taken by Nokia E50

Alcohol - taken by Nokia E50

It’s no Digital Rebel but hey, these photos look pretty good, don’t they? You can see a list of all photos at flickr.com/cameras/nokia/e50. We can’t compete with the Nseries guys, they have Carl Zeiss lenses which produce much better pictures but we still can make nice pics with our tiny E50 camera. Come on, take more pictures and post them on Flickr or any other place. I’ll link to the best ones.

To be honest I don’t like term speedlinking that much but I haven’t come up with anything better so far. If you have some ideas you know where to find me. Anyway, here we go:

Welcome to the Nokia E50 Blog

Jaro 24. November 2006 :: , ,

Nokia Connecting People

This little blog has grown a lot in the past couple of weeks. When we launched 2 months ago we were counting daily visitors on one hand. Today there are hundreds of people coming to this place looking for the information about Nokia E50. I think it’s appropriate to say that we have grown into a little community in this jungle called the Internet.

I’d like to take the opportunity and thank to all who have contributed either by commenting, sending tips, answering questions or linking to us. Although I can’t mention all of you it doesn’t mean I don’t know about you. I do and I hope I can give back to you soon in some form.

Where is the Nokia E50 Blog heading? Although I’m running it by myself at the moment I plan to take some people on board later. If you are interested in contributing get in touch with me by email contact@nokiae50.info.

And finally a few words about myself. My name is Jaro and I live in Finland – home of the Nokia phones. I’m a proud owner of the E50 and that’s one of the reasons I started this blog. My aim is to help other users, exchange tips for useful applications and learn more about this great phone. Remember, the wisdom is in crowd, so let’s keep in touch, we all can benefit from it. After all, Nokia’s slogan is Connecting People and I think they are doing their job just great ;)

Speedlinking 15. November 2006

Hi guys, there are couple of posts around the mobile blogs which caught my attention lately. I thought I would highlight them here:

Screenshot application now Symbian Signed

Jaro 12. November 2006 :: , , ,

Designed for S60 devices

A very popular application for the S60 devices – Screenshot – has now the Symbian Signed mark on it. Congratulations to Antony Pranata who is the author of this piece of software. I use his application almost on a daily basis and this blog wouldn’t be so interesting without it.

For all of you who want to go and download the latest version I would suggest wait for some time. Antony just discovered a little bug and will be releasing a new version soon. As he says it will take another 2-3 weeks for this new version to be signed again. And what does ‘Symbian Signed’ mean for us, users?

If an application is Symbian Signed, it has successfully met the criteria defined in the Symbian Signed Test Criteria. The Test Criteria are designed to validate that an application behaves properly on the specified Symbian OS phone or phones, for example handling low memory correctly or informing the user that a billable event is about to take place.

For more information see the End User Statement

Solution for Gmail Mobile Network Unavailable (updated)

Jaro 9. November 2006 :: , , , ,

Like many of you I have also installed Google for mobiles on my Nokia E50 right after it was announced. My excitement was quickly replaced by frustration. Google Mobile application denied to work smoothly on my phone. The message I was getting and many of you are getting too was:

Network Unavailable: this program requires a working
data connection. Please check your signal strength.

There are many smart people out there and it didn’t take long and someone found a solution. On your pc switch your Gmail display language to English (US) and everything should work smoothly. Let us know if this solution worked for you. If you know any other ways how to make Google Mobile work please share.

I will soon explore the application on my Nokia E50 and will post some screenshots. Stay tuned!

UPDATE: just a quick note that there is another solution to this problem offered directly by Google. Check it out, it might help you to get the mobile Gmail working.

T-Mobile offers Nokia E50

Jaro 8. November 2006 :: , ,

I’ve read from a few sources that T-Mobile now offers Nokia E50 as a part of its business phone portfolio. Their official website doesn’t have the phone on the list. I couldn’t find the E50 on any local website too. You should check out with your local T-Mobile office I’m sure they started to offer it with many tariffs. For instance here are 3 T-Mobile tariffs for the Nokia E50.

Although I never bought phone from the provider they have sometimes pretty good deals. Check it out, maybe you can get the E50 cheaper than buying it without tariff.

How fast can you SMS?

Jaro 27. October 2006 :: , , , ,

I’ve seen some very fast texters. Some of them can type a message without single mistake twice as fast as me. Now, I’m not the slowest guy also but I still can’t beat James Trusler from Shoreham who is the world’s fastest texter.

James sends about 500 messages from his phone every week. He has used his mobile phone to send messages for eight years, for everything from booking appointments at the hairdresser to wooing the woman in his life. James has his own website where he offers some tips and the SMS trainer.

He is able to type the following text in 67 seconds:

The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.

Tricky, isn’t it? James made this record 2 years ago. I’m sure there are some skilfull texters out there who are able to beat him. If you think you are faster than James try it out and post your best time in the comments under this article. We will then announce the winner. Let’s see if we can beat James!

DIGG THIS!

Nokia mobile phone - Made in Finland

Jaro 20. October 2006 :: , , , ,

While browsing various internet forums I noticed that many people do care where their mobile phone was manufactured. I didn’t myself notice any differences between let’s say Asian and Finnish Nokia phones but some people believe that those made in Finland are of better quality.

Nokia has a factory in Salo, a small town near Turku on the south of Finland. That’s where the “Made in Finland” Nokia mobiles come from. If you want to get one your best chance is to order it from a finnish online store. There are many of them but only some have their websites in English. Also I’m not sure if they accept orders from abroad.

Next week I’m going to look into the possibilities of ordering a mobile phone from finnish online stores. So stay with me if you want to have a Nokia phone made if Finland. I can’t promise you’ll get one but your chances will be much higher. Grab this RSS feed and you’ll be informed of every new article posted here on this blog.

Rescue your dead phone

Jaro 19. October 2006 :: , ,

I came across a good tip over at Risotto’s weblog which I thought might be useful also for owners of the Nokia E50. If your phone dies and nothing helps try the old trick – format your phone by pressing a combination of 3 keys – green key, star key and key number 3. It should work on all S60 devices but I haven’t tried it on my Nokia E50 yet. Be aware that after this you will lose all your data (and that’s why you should do a regular backup).

Since the E61 powers up immediately when you insert the battery you will have to push those three keys before you insert the battery. As soon the battery is inserted to Nokia logo will show up for a while. You must hold the buttons until the pin code entry comes up. While you hold the keys the unit will reformat its flash memory and revert to a factory default state.

Read the whole story over at Risotto’s weblog.

Problems with Bluetooth?

Jaro 16. October 2006 :: , , , , , ,

Bluetooth is a great technology but sometimes it just doesn’t work. File transfer between pc and mobile phone often fails. Unless there is something really wrong with your pc or phone here are a few steps that should make your Bluetooth work:

1. Unpair all devices. Bluetooth doesn’t like too many paired devices. Go to the settings and delete all pairings.

2. Right-click on the Bluetooth icon in the right bottom corner of your pc screen and stop Bluetooth.

3. Unplug the Bluetooth dongle from your pc and plug it in again.

4. Right-click on the Bluetooth icon and start Bluetooth.

5. Pair your phone with computer. After searching and pairing allow also authorization. This will create more trust between the two devices.

Now you should be able to establish connection and transfer files without any problems.

Things that bother me on my Nokia E50

Jaro 15. October 2006 :: , , , ,

Nothing’s perfect and although I’m really satisfied with my Nokia E50 there are a few things I’d like to see improved. Here is my list, who knows, maybe there is someone listening :)

1. I want to be able to run an application right after the installation. A popup note Launch application now? right after the installation would be nice.

2. Location of the Edit key is quite unfortunate. Did you try to press the edit key and the selection key holding your phone only in one hand? Impossible. Well, not impossible but definitely very difficult. Placing the edit key at the left bottom side seems like a better solution to me.

3. What’s with the default screensaver? The font is so small that it’s almost unreadable. I’ve got a good sight but figuring out the actual date is a challenge. Increase the font size of the screensaver!

Most of the other issues like repeated alarm, autolock etc. can be solved with 3rd party applications. Other than that it’s a perfect phone :). What would you improve on your E50?

Two things

Jaro 11. October 2006 :: , , , ,

Hi guys, I’ve got two things for you to check out. I collect interesting links about Nokia E50 so I thought why to keep them for myself if I could share them with you!

What got my attention a few days ago was a review by WirelessAndy. He writes very interesting Nit Picking Reviews and this time he went for the Nokia E50. Check it out and you’ll see why he calls the reviews nit picking ;).

I’m not sure if this is news for you but there is a new solution for the push email for Nokia E50 (and the whole Eseries). It was launched today by Cortado and the standard package costs $4.98 per month. It’s not the cheapest but if it works well I guess it’s worth the money. You can try it out one month for free.

250 MB mailbox, up to 3 email addresses, Outlook Web Access, professional spam filter, and virus protection. Print, fax, and Print-to-Screen as additional options.

There are also Business and Business Plus solutions available in case you need more webspace or want to use some of the advanced functions. By the way, do you know of any free push email service for the Nokia Eseries?

GSMArena reviews Nokia E50

Jaro 4. October 2006 :: , , ,

GSMArena published a detailed review of Nokia E50:

Nokia E50 is flawless in terms of construction. We could only mention the On/Off button which is made as part of a plastic cap, situated on the top of the phone. It’s quite sure that after some time of use this plastic cap will have scars from the user’s nails. Nokia could have thought about that. Besides this minor issue, we must say that the rest of the construction elements are absolutely perfect. No creeks were produced, every part stays in its place and the phone seems unbreakable.

I must say I don’t see any problem with the On/Off button. You can press it with the tip of your finger, no need to use nails and scratch it. It’s made of plastic and rubber, in other words it’s firm but flexible. To turn off the phone, lock it or change the profile you have to press the button a little bit stronger but not too strong. It prevents from accidental turn offs but it’s still comfortable to use.

Otherwise, great review from the GSMArena guys, as usually. I’ll add it to the list of the Nokia E50 reviews.

My E50 has arrived

Jaro 3. October 2006 :: ,

Today I went to pick up my black Nokia E50 from the post office. I really like the post service here in Finland. They are extremely fast. When something is sent on Monday evening you can pick it up on Tuesday morning. It’s enough to have the tracking code which is given to you when ordering online. With this code you can track down your item. Let me say that it works like a charm.

But enough about the Finnish post office. If you read my previous article you know that I wanted a model without camera. Well, in the end I ordered the one with camera. It was only 25 EUR more expensive and although camera in Nokia E50 is only 1.3 megapixel I thought it was worth the money.

I’m exploring it now. I’m already fairly familiar with the S60 phones but there are always new things to learn. I already spotted some great features I haven’t seen before but there are also a few drawbacks. I will write about it all soon. Stay with me as we will learn some tricks how to take advantage of all the features Nokia E50 offers us.

I'm gonna buy Nokia E50

Today I made my final decision. For a long time I have been a Siemens user. You don’t want to know which model I’m using at the moment but it’s safe to say that it’s time to replace it.

I have been in love with Nokia E50 since May when it was introduced as a new member of the Eseries family. Since then I have made a lot of research, did a few comparisons and read many reviews. I did even hold it in my hand and man, does it feel good or what?

So today I decided I’m gonna buy it. I went through some online stores and the best price I found was 260 EUR. This is for a model without camera. I really don’t need to have a camera in my phone. I can’t see myself taking pictures and sending it to my friends or family. After all, it’s a real pain to send MMS in Europe. It’s either costly or impossible.

I’ll go for the black version. It looks elegant. As soon as I get it I’ll post a few pictures to my Nokia E50 photo section and make a in depth reviews. So stay tuned, grab the feed and come back for more info about Nokia E50.

Needless to say that if you own a Nokia E50 and want to share your experiences you are welcome to send me an email to info@nokiae50.info. I’ll be happy to publish it.
