Smart2go - maps, GPS navigation and city guides all in one

How would you like to have maps, GPS navigation and city guides all in one package on your mobile phone? Sounds good? Then check out smart2go – an application released by Nokia a few months ago. It’s one of the most interesting applications I have ever installed on my device. Too bad I can’t take a full advantage of it due to the lack of a GPS receiver.
Smart2go runs on the Nokia E50 just fine although it’s not listed among the supported devices. I downloaded the version for Nokia E61 and used maps and route planning features without any problems. Hopefully Nokia E50 will be soon officially supported so we can take a full advantage of all the functions. Let’s see what we can actually do with smart2go:
smart2go maps

The main part of smart2go are maps. You can download them on the go as you browse different locations or you can download them beforehand to your device via MapLoader. The latter option is free as you don’t need to use an active connection and pay your provider for the data transfer. Simply connect your phone to the pc via USB and load any maps you need. It’s recommended to use a memory card (maps are quite large files) unless you have a big internal memory.
Maps are full of very powerful features. You can calculate the distance between any two places, simulate navigation from one place to another or get a step by step guide how to get from place A to place B. This is all part of the route planner which you can use even without a GPS device.
smart2go as GPS
I haven’t had a chance to test the GPS feature because I don’t have a GPS receiver. GPS receivers are built in some Nokia phones (Nseries) but other users have to buy an external GPS device (prices start from around $100). If you have experience with external GPS devices please let me know.

smart2go city guides
City guides are a paid feature of smart2go. You can purchase a city guide straight from your phone. There are a few options including MasterCard, Visa, Amex or Phone Bill. Cityguides are a great way to discover close restaurants or hotels when you are in a foreign town.
Have you used smart2go? How do you like it?
